Tell us a little more about the history and current events of The Beechwood Home:

In April 1888, Associated Charities of Cincinnati invited a group of civic leaders to meet and discuss the need for a “home for incurables”.  Within two and a half years, a house was rented on the corner of Saunders and Bigelow Streets, and a nurse was hired at the salary of $14 per month.  Already needing more room, the Home was moved to Walnut Hills in 1893.  Community support and gifts increased as admissions to the Home became more numerous.  Less than 12 years after the Home first opened its doors, the cornerstone was laid for a new Home to be built on Pogue Avenue.  It would accommodate 40 residents on five acres in Hyde Park.  Two more wings were added in later years.  Through the years, the Board of Trustees and the community have been actively involved.  Fund-raising events such as bazaars, charity balls, carnivals, luncheons, and lawn fetes became popular.  The Home’s endowment fund was made possible by these fund-raisers as well as by generous gifts and bequests.  In 1968, when it was decided to build a new Home three feet from the existing one, these funds were sufficient to avoid borrowing.  The building standing today has been continually updated to provide efficient and comfortable living for our residents.  It was designed for additional wings to be built as needed.  The Beechwood Home is now an eighty (80) bed skilled nursing facility with 8 additional assisted living units.   The Beechwood Home employs approximately 160 people.

Beechwood Resident

What is something special you would like us to know about your facility or your staff?

Our facility is substantially different from other long-term care facilities in two distinct ways.  First, it is a center of excellence for specialized, comprehensive care for residents with multiple sclerosis and related neurological diseases.  Multiple Sclerosis represents well over 50% of the resident population.  Second, the residents that The Beechwood Home serves are younger than the average long-term care resident.  The majority of residents are female with an average age of forty-eight (48) years old.  The Beechwood Home’s program of care for all our residents is focused upon maximizing independence, minimizing secondary and tertiary disabilities, and improving quality of life for these very demanding residents.

Awards and Commendations:

  • Highest rating of Five Stars by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
  • Winner of the Tri-State Healthcare Hero Award
  • The Long Term Care Facility of Excellence Award, 2007, which has only been granted to four other Long Term Care Facilities in the United States.
  • The Beechwood Home, in 2007, was one of the 12 finalist for the ONE Award (based off of the Baldridge Award) sponsored by various organizations in Cincinnati
  • Continues to excel in their CMS, VA and Department of Health annual surveys.
  • Medicare presented The Beechwood Home in 2008-2009-2010 and 2011 with a 5 star rating, which is the highest rating a facility can receive based on quality and other quantitative data
